SOCIAL WORKER

The Hiscock Legal Aid Society, a nonprofit legal aid organization, seeks a Social Worker for its Parole Program.  The social worker will evaluate clients and recommend necessary treatment options, and will advocate for alternatives to incarceration or for lesser sentences.  The social worker will work closely with Parole Program attorneys and will be responsible for interviewing clients, communicating and coordinating with treatment providers to obtain appropriate placements. organizing necessary paperwork and supporting documents, and performing bio-psycho-social assessments.

Qualifications: MSW and NYS certification in social work (LMSW); background in working with clients with special needs: history of substance abuse,  mental illness, intellectual disabilities and developmental delays; excellent oral and written communication skills; ability to negotiate with community-based treatment providers: excellent organizational skills; ability to work within a team.

EXPERIENCED CRIMINAL DEFENSE/APPELLATE ATTORNEY

The Hiscock Legal Aid Society, a nonprofit legal aid organization, seeks an experienced and talented attorney committed to indigent defense for its Appeals Program. The Society is the appellate defender for Onondaga County, providing representation in criminal and family court appeals to the Fourth Department and Court of Appeals. The attorney will staff a new Appeals Consultation Project, and will serve as an appellate specialist providing support and counsel to trial-level attorneys.

The attorney will be expected to collaborate with trial attorneys to analyze legal issues and develop legal strategy, assist with trial preparation, appear in court for hearings and trials, and provide training on timely legal and forensic issues. The attorney may also carry a small appeals caseload.

The ideal candidate will be dynamic and able to work as part of a team. Minimum of 7 to 10 years’ experience handling felony-level criminal trials and/or appeals required. Excellent analytical, research, writing, oral advocacy, and interpersonal skills are required. Admission to the New York State Bar is required.

EXPERIENCED APPELLATE ATTORNEY

The Hiscock Legal Aid Society, a nonprofit legal aid organization, seeks an attorney committed to indigent defense for its Appeals Program.  The Society is the appellate defender for Onondaga County, providing representation in criminal and family court appeals to the Fourth Department and Court of Appeals.  The attorney will coordinate and oversee a new Caseload Relief Project, and will be responsible for the supervision of several contract attorneys and a full-time staff attorney. The attorney will also carry an appeals caseload.

Minimum of 5 years’ experience handling appeals required. Supervisory and case management experience strongly preferred. Excellent analytical, research, writing, oral advocacy, and interpersonal skills are required. Admission to the New York State Bar is required.

The paralegal will perform legal and factual research, help prepare legal documents, gather documents and prepare records on appeal, maintain a case management system, prepare and process correspondence, and communicate with court personnel. Qualifications: paralegal certificate or equivalent work experience; proficient in LexisNexis; proficient in Word, Excel, and Access or other database software; strong attention to detail; excellent organizational and interpersonal skills; experience and/or commitment to working with low-income persons.
